Health Insight

BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic one. It doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or overall body composition. Consult a healthcare professional for a complete health assessment.

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify underweight, overweight, and obesity in adults. It is defined as a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of their height in meters (kg/m²).

Why BMI Matters

High BMI can be an indicator of high body fatness. BMI can be used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems, but it is not diagnostic of the body fatness or health of an individual.

BMI Categories

  • Underweight: BMI is less than 18.5
  • Healthy weight: BMI is 18.5 to 24.9
  • Overweight: BMI is 25 to 29.9
  • Obese: BMI is 30 or higher

Limitations

Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI but low body fat. Conversely, older adults who have lost muscle may have a healthy BMI but higher body fat. Always interpret BMI results alongside other health markers like waist circumference and physical activity levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BMI an accurate measure of health?

BMI is a useful screening tool for the general population, but it does not measure body fat directly. Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI without having high body fat.

What is a healthy BMI range?

For most adults, an ideal BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. However, health should be assessed holistically with a healthcare provider.
